A long weekend on Koh Phi Phi – a holiday to get over another holiday. Just what I needed.
(My partners in crime for the weekend)
I had been to Phi Phi a few times previously but only on day trips.
(Coming home from Phi Phi in December 2012 with my cousins)
It really is a beautiful place. Turquoise water, white sand and palm trees. What’s not to like.
Apparently everyone else in South East Asia feels the same way and the place is packed with tourists. Mainly backpackers, dressed in fluro singlets and aimlessly wandering the narrow streets with a bucket of vodka looking for the best party.
(Bucket of alcohol anyone?)
Our resort was halfway up a hill meaning a lot of steps anytime you wanted to go anywhere. But the views were worth it. And there were no fluro singlets.

The main reason for our trip was to snorkel. We had all the tips from friends and knew where we wanted to go. We hired a long tail boat and set sail.
First stop was Bamboo Island, a beautiful little island with a perfect white sand beach. Beaches aren’t as common as you might think on the island as the islands can just be rocky outcrops of limestone. The snorkeling was good and the beach not too crowded.
Next stop was Mosquito Island which was much prettier than it sounds. No beach here, just snorkeling straight off the boat. The fish here were beautiful, colourful and not at all shy! As soon as I jumped in the cleaner fish attacked my toes. Clearly they needed a wash…. All the other fish would swim up to my mask and stare at me curiously, or just swim by as if I didn’t exist.
With a storm coming in, our ‘Captain’ sped off to our last stop, a submerged reef in the middle of the ocean. While the snorkeling was fantastic, the thunder from the approaching storm could be herd even with my head underwater. We promptly headed back before we got shipwrecked.
The following morning we walked up even more stairs to the viewpoint where the view were even more spectacular.
