Finally I make it off the East coast of Mexico! Somewhere new – Merida!

It’s cute. A town with a huge city square surrounded by a Cathedral and colonial buildings. Coloured buildings of blue, yellow, green, pink. Very cool.

Angela visited Chichen Itza, so I spent the day wandering the town. The Sunday market was on, so I got to shop and try out different foods and even got to see a parade. I ended up at a local square with a band playing and locals dancing. It was magic!

(Tough choice for a kid!)

The locals here are so friendly and exceptionally proud of their Mayan heritage. People went out of their way to help us out. I spent time looking at giant murals depicting Mayan life and the Spanish takeover of Mexico. Sad to see such a beautiful old culture changed so dramatically when the Spaniards came. They are clearly doing as much as they can as they can to hold onto what they have, with Mayan community co-operative shops operating throughout town.

This town was a Mecca for photo opportunities, so apologies for the amount! A few other happy snaps from around town…
